Sutton GCSE students celebrate outstanding exam results

GCSE students in Sutton were jubilant today, Thursday 22 August, as they received another set of excellent exam results that continue a steady rise in outstanding achievement.

GCSE students in Sutton continue to outperform national results - early data analysis shows that:

  • 85.0% of pupils in Sutton schools achieved grade 4 or above in English and Maths (an increase of 0.5% from last year)
  • 89.6% of pupils achieved 4+ in English (a decrease of 0.2% from last year), and 87.3% achieved 4+ in Maths (an increase of 0.6% from last year). This compares with a national average of 61.6% and 59.6% respectively.

Sutton Council joined students at Oaks Park as they celebrated receiving their results. Headteacher Amit Amin, was delighted with their results, saying: “We are extremely proud of our staff and students for all the hard work they have put in this year to achieve some excellent results. The Oaks Park ethos of student resilience, staff expertise and community spirit underpins many success stories, ensuring our students confidently access their next steps.”

Carew Academy special school Principal, James Kearns, said: "Students at Carew Academy achieved some stunning results this year, including a Grade 7 in English iGSCE, a Grade 8 in Photography GCSE, Grade 6 in Art GCSE and a year 10 student attaining a Grade 5 in GCSE Maths. 

Other fantastic results include 90 passes across 9 qualifications in English, 75 passes across 7 qualifications in Maths. 66 BTEC qualifications, 31 Science qualifications, 51 PE, 30 RSHE and 30 IT qualifications. These range from Entry levels, Princes Trust up to GCSEs.

“These results are truly inspiring and epitomise our motto 'let's show what we can do'. We do not put a limit on what our SEND students can achieve, and our results show this."

Councillor Marian James, Chair of Sutton Council’s People Committee, said: “Congratulations to all our students who received their results today. Whether you have achieved the results you were hoping for, or if the outcomes were different from what you expected, you should be proud of the hard work and dedication you have shown. This has not been an easy journey.

“The past few years have brought unique challenges that you have faced with determination and resilience. You have navigated not only demanding academic pressures but also a global pandemic that changed the way you learned and interacted with others.”
