Sutton residents will soon start to see new, greener and cleaner waste collection and street cleaning vehicles around the borough as part of the Council’s new contract with Veolia.

Councillors recently visited the Dennis factory production line to see first-hand the progress with production of Sutton’s vehicles, which are made wholly in the United Kingdom. The first new waste collection vehicles have hit the streets already with more to follow in September - and new, electric street cleaning vehicles are coming from April.

The vehicles are a key part of the Council’s new waste and street cleaning contract starting on 31 March 2025. Residents can expect to see real service improvements over the next eight years of the new contract, including:

A resident-focused service - with a special focus on improvements for residents living in flats above shops; encouraging the reduction/reuse of waste; and responding quickly to reports from residents.
Improved street cleaning - removing bags from streets quickly, as well as acting quickly on spillages and flytipping
Action on climate change - reducing emissions with cleaner and more sustainable fuels and with small electric street cleansing vehicles; encouraging less food waste and contamination; and making recycling easier.

Councillor Christopher Woolmer, Chair of Sutton’s Environment & Sustainable Transport Committee, said:
“It was wonderful to go to the factory and see in person the future of recycling and waste collections, and street cleaning in Sutton.

“These new vehicles will be a very visible sign of how the Council is investing in what residents want to see: easier recycling, cleaner streets and action on climate change.

“Keep an eye out for our new vehicles. They will be coming to a street near you very soon!”

Scott Edgell, General Manager for Veolia South London, said:
“We’re excited to begin our new eight-year partnership with the London Borough of Sutton with a new, cleaner and greener fleet of collection and street cleansing vehicles.

“These new vehicles will go hand in hand with improved services for Sutton residents, including increased street cleaning schedules. By constantly innovating our resources and services, we can reduce carbon emissions and work towards a circular economy while supporting Sutton Council on their net zero carbon journey.”
