Sutton Council has today (20 January) launched its latest mental health resource, “Navigating Tough Times.” The booklet aims to encourage men to prioritise their mental health by offering practical advice on essential topics such as finances, relationships and overall well-being.
Recognising that men often face barriers when it comes to discussing mental health, the booklet provides clear steps to support those who may be struggling.
To maximise the number of men who access support, the “Navigating Tough Times” booklet will be distributed across various community locations, including GP surgeries, gyms, barbershops, and community centres. It will also be available online, ensuring that help is just a click away for those who prefer digital access.
As part of this initiative, Sutton Council is encouraging participation in the Zero Suicide Alliance (ZSA) Suicide Awareness Training. The free, online course designed to help individuals identify the warning signs of suicide and provide support to those in need. This training offers an invaluable opportunity for community members to become better equipped in supporting conversations about mental health.
Councillor Marian James, Lead Member for People at the London Borough of Sutton, said:
“Supporting our residents’ mental health is a key priority for the Council. Encouraging men, who still face a lot of stigma, to talk about and seek help to support their mental health is critical. It is important to remember that it's okay to not be okay.
"We understand that it can be difficult for men to open up about their mental health concerns. The aim of the booklet and the support available is to encourage men to start conversations about their health and to seek support if they need it.
“This initiative is part of Sutton Council’s broader commitment to improving mental health awareness and reducing stigma. By making resources available in everyday settings and promoting tools like the ZSA training, we are taking proactive steps to support our residents during tough times.”
