Council’s ambitious cycling plans given TfL funding boost

12 cycle hangars and 4 secure bike shelters in total are to be installed at a number of sites managed by the Council’s housing provider, Sutton Housing Partnership, and local workplaces, including St.Helier Hospital and St Raphael’s Hospice.

The increase in cycling parking provision will help residents and people working in Sutton make cycling easier and more attractive as a transport option each week by ensuring more journeys begin and end with a secure place to park. 

The funding will also help with the Council’s ambitious plans to encourage the uptake of cycling in the borough and reduce the amount of car journeys locally, helping those who live and work in Sutton to be active citizens. 

Councillor Manuel Abellan, Chair of Sutton Council’s Environment and Neighbourhood Committee, said:

“We are delighted to receive this additional funding for cycle parking spaces in Sutton and encourage residents in the borough to make the switch to more sustainable methods of transport.

“Making cycling easier for residents and people working in the borough is key to our plans to improve local air quality, reduce car journeys and help tackle the climate emergency.  

“Our ambition is for Sutton to be London’s greenest borough and these new cycle parking facilities are just one of many steps we will be taking this year to make it happen.”

The funding is part of an initiative that has pledged £3.5 million to 30 London boroughs to create 7,800 new cycle spaces in town centres, stations, schools and residential areas.

TfL's Cycle Parking Implementation Plan, published last year, showed that thousands of new cycle parking spaces are needed to keep up with increased numbers of people travelling by bike.
