Sutton Council has announced its latest green initiative by installing solar panels on the roof at the Westcroft Leisure Centre in Carshalton.
The project marks a significant step towards a more sustainable future for the building and the wider community. Developed in partnership with Custom Solar, a leading UK solar energy specialist , over 528 high-efficiency solar panels will be installed, generating an estimated 233,476 kWh of clean energy annually. That will provide almost e 25% of the leisure centre's electricity, significantly cutting carbon emissions. The solar panel installation is also expected to deliver substantial financial benefits as well, saving the centre an estimated £52,000 this year.
Councillor Christopher Woolmer, Sutton Council’s Lead for the Environment said: "Sutton residents will soon be able to enjoy a greener Westcroft Leisure Centre.
“The solar panel installation is a testament to our commitment to environmental sustainability and our responsibility to the local community.
“By harnessing the power of renewable energy, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also setting a positive example for other businesses and residents in Sutton."
Peggy Lee, Group Sustainability Manager for Everyone Active, said: “It is great news to have more onsite renewable energy generation, which will work to further reduce the centre’s carbon footprint.
“Everyone Active is proud to work alongside Sutton Council to support them in achieving their net zero ambitions, which is the most important part of our own net zero strategy.”
