Vaping & Young People: Be Clear about Vaping

R U Being Sucked In?

Vaping has become increasingly popular among young people. While it might seem harmless and fun, the truth is vaping is not risk-free and can be addictive. Vapes are not for young people or non-smokers.

Don’t be sucked in, learn the facts!

Vaping vs. Smoking

Vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking as you don’t inhale the toxic tar and carbon monoxide you get from tobacco smoke. Nicotine vapes can help adult smokers to quit. But vapes are not harmless and short-term effects can include coughing, headaches, dizziness, and sore throats, while the long-term effects remain unknown.

Can you get addicted?

Yes! Many vapes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive. Anyone who uses nicotine vapes regularly may become addicted and find it difficult to stop. Withdrawal symptoms can be unpleasant, including cravings, irritability, and trouble concentrating. Be smart. Don’t start.

Vaping is Illegal for under 18s

Nicotine vapes are age-restricted for a reason. Selling or buying nicotine vapes for anyone under 18 is illegal in the UK.

Marketing tactics

Vaping advertisements often use flashy ads and flavours to appeal to young people. Don’t be sucked in!

Waste

Did you know that around five million disposable vapes are thrown away every week in the UK? Over a year, this is equivalent to the lithium batteries of 5,000 electric vehicles. The lithium batteries in disposable vapes can pose a fire risk if they’re mishandled, and the plastics can pollute and damage the environment. To tackle these issues, the UK will soon ban disposable vapes under the new Tobacco and Vapes Bill.

What young people in Sutton have said

  • ‘I think it’s important for our generation to stop vaping because it will be a repeat of what happened with smoking. Smoking was shown as being a cool thing in movies. Nowadays vaping is being seen on social media and people’s stories. It’s important for us to not pick it up.’

  • ‘People think it's a tool to calm down but it's nothing but an escape from what you think is going to be a good thing but it ends up adding to your worries.’

  • ‘Hopefully with this campaign we will help young people to stop vaping and indulge in other activities which will develop skills like sports’

The Campaign

B Clear About Vaping is a campaign created by students from Carshalton Boys Sports College. Its goal is to educate and empower young people to make informed decisions about vaping. The campaign addresses key issues like peer pressure, appealing flavours, and misinformation that can influence young people's choices.
