For Sutton, For the Community: Transforming Sutton Town Centre

For Sutton, for the Community is the strapline of our brand new cinema at Throwley Yard, which I had the privilege of attending the official opening of this week.

Created through a strong partnership between the Council and the Really Local Group, Throwley Yard is more than just a cinema.  Alongside the four state of the art cinema screens, there is a DJ school, run by the Hope Programme, a comedy club, a welcoming cafe and bar, and spaces for community activities for performances and exhibitions.

This is Sutton at its best. I’m excited to see our long-term vision for the town centre starting to become an exciting reality and creating a vibrant and sustainable place where people can live, work and spend their leisure time. As our main town centre in the borough, all Sutton’s residents can visit and enjoy all these changes and improvements.

Throwley Yard joins Oru Space in bringing a new lease of life to Sutton and is designed to meet the changing and future needs of our high street and our community. We will also soon be unveiling the refurbishment works to the old Top Shop/Vision Express building in the high street with new retail units.

If this wasn't enough, works have also started to bring Sutton College into the heart of the town centre, opposite Asda, and our ambitious building programme, including the transformation of Beech Tree Place, Elm Grove and B&Q will deliver much needed housing, including many new council homes.

Sutton is growing. We are providing new spaces to support our local businesses, up-and-coming performers, as well as delivering new homes and facilities to support our ever-increasing population. But our plans don’t stop there.

Over the coming weeks, another major milestone will be reached, as councillors are set to appoint the developer that will deliver council offices and a library hub, new retail and leisure  on the existing St Nicholas Shopping Centre and new homes on the Civic Centre sites. I’ll share more news about our exciting plans for these locations shortly.

In the meantime, I hope over the weekend, you can take some time to come to Sutton town centre and support our new local venues. I promise you will enjoy them!
