Helen Bailey set to become Sutton Council’s permanent Chief Executive

Helen will be joining Sutton from a long career in public service during which time she has held a range of senior roles.

Ms Bailey emerged as Sutton’s preferred candidate following a robust selection process, led by the Senior Officer Appointment Committee – made up of councillors from both main parties.

As Sutton Council’s new Chief Executive, Ms Bailey will lead Sutton’s Corporate Management Team. She will take over from the interim Chief Executive, Mary Morrissey, who will return to her role as the Strategic Director of Environment, Housing and Regeneration.

Speaking about the appointment, Leader of the Council, Councillor Ruth Dombey, said:

“Sutton is already a great place to live, work and raise a family and I know that with Helen’s management of the council we will now achieve even more. Helen’s application shone through a very strong field of candidates. The strength of all those shortlisted is testament to the fact we continue to attract the brightest and best to the borough.

“Helen’s experience, breadth of knowledge and insight into the public sector will serve Sutton well over the coming years. We have ambitious plans for the future and with Helen’s help we’ll now make them a reality.

“I also want to take this opportunity to thank Mary for her interim stewardship of the council over the past few months. Her experience and knowledge of the borough provided stability during a period of change.” 

Endorsing the appointment, Leader of the Opposition, Councillor Tim Crowley, said: 

"We consider Helen is the right person to help us take Sutton forward, and look forward to working with her in the same open and transparent manner as we worked with her predecessors."

Speaking about taking up the position, Helen Bailey said:

“I am delighted and honoured to have been offered the opportunity to become Chief Executive of Sutton. Over the years I have observed and admired the achievements of Sutton, and it is a particular privilege to take up the reins when the borough is on the brink of some exciting developments. I continue to be impressed by everyone I have met and by the dedication of colleagues, councillors and partners. I am very much looking forward to getting to know the whole borough better.”
