London Cancer Hub moves forward with clearance of old hospital buildings

Plans to create a world-leading life sciences campus in Belmont have taken another step forward as Sutton Council approved plans to clear disused hospital buildings from the site.

The London Cancer Hub is already home to The Institute of Cancer Research, London and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.  

Planning permission granted today will see the derelict former Sutton Hospital buildings cleared to make way for state-of-the-art modern facilities which will form part of the new world-leading campus for cancer research and treatment. The clearance work is expected to start in April and complete in the autumn.

This latest step comes after councillors approved plans to begin the search for an investment partner who will help to develop the site. Last month the Council also won £14.1 million of Levelling Up funding to double the number of trains running to Belmont.

The regeneration of the site will create 13,000 high-quality jobs in construction, health, science and education and bring unprecedented investment to Sutton. 

Once complete, the campus will feature green, vibrant public spaces with a focus on wellbeing, creating an attractive place to work and visit and a healing environment for patients.
