No change to collection day for most residents on launch of new waste contract

Our new waste and recycling contract with Veolia, which starts on 31 March, will see changes and improvements to  waste and recycling collections and street cleaning in Sutton.

For most people there will be no changes to your bin collections. We have written directly to those homes whose collection day will be changing. If we have not written to you already, your collection day will not be changing.

Having our bins collected is one of the key services provided by the council. Gone are the days of the corporate dust cart and for the last eight years Sutton’s waste and recycling has been collected by Veolia.  With nearly 90,000 households in the borough this adds up to an incredible one million individual bin collections each month.  Over 99% of collections are made on schedule and on time.

This new eight-year plan isn't just about picking up your waste and recycling though. It’s about making the service better for the people who live across Sutton. We’ve listened to resident feedback and over the next eight years of the new contract, residents can expect to see real service improvements.

You said you wanted:

  • more responsive services: our new depot in Sutton will mean faster response times when you report issues with your waste & recycling collection or street cleaning
  • better street cleaning: the new contract will focus on faster removal of refuse sacks on the street, quicker action on spillages by collection crews and getting tougher on fly-tipping. We want everyone to enjoy clean streets in Sutton.
  • action on climate change: residents will start to see new, greener and cleaner waste collection vehicles and new electric street cleaning vehicles around the borough. We’re reducing emissions with cleaner fuels, extending food waste collections to more homes and reducing contamination of the different types of waste and recycling.

This new contract will show how we are investing in what you, our residents, want: easier recycling, cleaner streets and action on climate change.

We all want a greener, cleaner and more sustainable Sutton for all. I believe this new waste contract will help us deliver that.
