Ukraine - one year on

Today, I joined the Mayor of Sutton and the rest of the nation in a minute's silence to pay tribute to the courage and bravery of the Ukrainian people, as we mark one year since the Russian invasion.

Standing in front of our Civic offices, I was reminded of the scenes from a year ago, seeing

innocent civilians, families and children fleeing their homes. It was heartbreaking to see.  One year on the courage of the Ukrainian people, their endurance and determination to protect their democracy, continues to be a source of inspiration to us all.

Since then, via the Homes for Ukraine scheme, people from our borough have opened up their homes and welcomed over 300 refugees to Sutton. I am proud that Sutton has been so welcoming in embracing the traditions and cultures of our new Ukrainian neighbours.

I have also been deeply touched by how willing and open many of our Ukrainian friends have been to speak about their experiences of having to flee their home and leave behind their families, friends and colleagues. It is important for us to hear these stories. They remind us of the fragility of our democracy and how lucky we are to live in a country where we can live in peace.

Sadly the story of Ukraine is not an isolated one. We must take a moment to think about all the conflicts taking place in the world today and the many countries where the fight for freedom continues.

There are still many Ukrainians looking to find a home in the UK, so if you are interested in joining the Homes for Ukraine scheme, you can find more information on our website

Tomorrow I will be attending an event at the Sutton Salvation Army Church to show my support and to reflect on the anniversary. Please come along if you can.

I would like to thank you for everything you are doing to support the people of Ukraine to help them feel welcome in our communities and in our borough.

Слава Україні!
