7 ways to avoid catching and spreading Covid-19

The Government’s new "Living with Covid" plan removes the legal restrictions we’ve been living with for the past two years. Instead, we’re all being asked to follow these seven steps to stay safe. Covid is still with us so we must all do what we can to stop the virus spreading.
1 Get vaccinated and don’t forget your booster
Covid vaccines have been effective at reducing the impact of the virus. If you haven’t had your first dose yet, it’s not too late to start. And don’t forget to get your booster when it’s due.
2 Stay home if you are unwell
Covid isn’t the only illness that can spread easily. If you are unwell, stay at home to reduce the risk of spreading infections to others.
3 Take a test if you have Covid symptoms and stay home if its positive
If you have Covid symptoms, take a PCR test to confirm if it’s Covid or not. Although it’s no longer a legal requirement to self isolate, the Government’s advice is to stay home for at least five days if you test positive for coronavirus. Covid tests are still free for everyone until 1 April.
4 Wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed spaces
Don’t throw your face coverings away! Wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed spaces, especially where you come into contact with people you do not usually meet, and please respect the preferences of other people who continue to wear a mask
5 Let fresh air in or meet outside
Covid spreads more easily in enclosed spaces. Reduce the risk by opening a window if you meet indoors, or meet outside instead.
6 Wash your hands or use hand sanitiser regularly
This is one habit we’ve all got used to during the pandemic that is good practice at any time to stop germs spreading.
7 Follow NHS advice to ‘Catch it, Bin it, Kill it’ for coughs and sneezes
Remember to carry tissues and use them to catch coughs or sneezes, then bin the tissues and to kill the germs by washing your hands.
Lots of people will feel nervous now the legal restrictions have been lifted. Please be considerate of other people’s preferences if they ask to meet outdoors, keep their distance and want to wear a face covering. The last two years have been tough for everyone and we will all learn to live with Covid at our own pace.
