Black History Month: Time for Change: Action Not Words

Last Saturday marked the start of Black History Month, which runs throughout October, and this year the theme is ‘Time for Change: Action Not Words’.
I am proud that Sutton is a diverse borough, with a rich multicultural heritage, and that we are able to celebrate the extraordinary contributions made by our African and Caribbean communities.
In recognition of Black History Month there are lots of exciting events being held in Sutton throughout October by local groups and organisations such as Sutton College, Sutton African and Caribbean Cultural Association and Sutton Housing Partnership. I am looking forward to seeing some of you at these events as we mark this important month of celebration and learning.
Sutton Library currently has an exhibition on their top floor about Dr George Rice, an African American doctor who lived in Sutton, and there is a free talk about his life and work on Friday 28 October 2-3pm. A community garden dedicated to his memory will soon be opened next to St Nicholas church.
This year’s theme ‘Time for Change: Action Not Words’, is something that Sutton Council has been putting into practice for some time.
I've seen first-hand the work Council staff have been doing to tackle discrimination and inequality in the workplace and it was great to see this work being recognised at an awards ceremony in London. Colleagues continue to listen to one another and most importantly are taking action.
I really would encourage everyone to get involved, celebrate, learn and share something new about Black History this October.
