Glenthorne High School to develop a small strip of land on Reigate Recreation Ground, adjacent to Glenthorne High School, to provide additional outdoor sporting facilities for community and school use.
The proposals will improve the recreational and sporting facilities on the strip of land adjacent to the school. The local community will have access to the facilities outside of school hours, while the improved space will be used by mainstream students as well as students with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND) during school opening hours.
The proposal includes a dedicated outdoor playground space for pupils with SEND to access, while the new sports facilities will give all students more space to exercise and play.
The move comes following an informal consultation undertaken by the school in autumn 2022 which received support from the school community and local residents.
While the proposal has received the support of the People Committee, which has also agreed to allocate funding for the scheme, the next stage of the process is for the school to prepare a planning application.
Councillor Marian James, Chair of the People Committee, said:
“The current play and sports ground space at Glenthorne High School is stretched to capacity. Creating this additional space for residents and students will make it easier for students and local people to be more physically active, and to enjoy Sutton’s green spaces.
“With its quiet area for SEND students, it will also help to realise our ambitious plans to make Sutton an inclusive place for everyone.”
