Scouts’ St George’s Day Parade in Sutton

As a local Scout leader, I was delighted to recently take part in Sutton Scouts' St George’s Day Parade and Promise renewal. Over 500 cubs and scouts plus leaders paraded up the High Street past the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Sutton and then renewed their promise in Manor Park. The parade was a great success and I want to say thank you to all the volunteers who helped to make it happen.

Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers from Groups and Units across the borough were proud to take part and it was fantastic to see. Squirrels are the newest and youngest members of the Scout Association, aged between 4 and 6, they are beginning their lifelong journey of outdoors and adventure.

The Mayor also presented Rosemary Ritson with the Coronation Medal for her outstanding service at the coronation of King Charles III.

80 years ago Scouts in Sutton would have been very aware that war in Europe was drawing to a close. This May Day weekend we will be remembering Victory in Europe (VE) Day with street parties taking place across the borough and commemorations in Sutton High Street, including a full-sized replica of a Spitfire. Come along between 10am and 3pm and join in as Sutton marks this historic time.

And on 8th May everyone is welcome to join the Mayor of Sutton, Councillor Colin Stears, accompanied by other councillors and council officers at 11.00am when the D-Day 80 Flag will be raised near Trinity Square, Sutton High Street. This will be followed by a 2-minute silence.

It looks like it is going to be a lovely weekend, so enjoy whatever you’re doing. Me? As a proud Scout, obviously, I’m off camping!
