Sutton's eagerly awaited new cultural destination, Throwley Yard, has opened its doors to welcome visitors with a little help from its ‘minions’.
The independent cinema, bar, cafe and shared community space offers a mix of movies, open mic nights, workshops and concerts. Fun for all ages, it includes an impressive line-up of baby-friendly shows, accessible screenings, Fun Sized Kids Club, Silver Screenings for seniors, National Theatre Live productions, staged concerts and the latest film releases.
Throwley Yard is the latest in a series of new businesses opening in the town centre as part of Sutton Council's ambitious regeneration plans. The former Chicago's nightclub on Throwley Road has been transformed into a state-of-the-art venue in collaboration with the Really Local Group.
Councillor Barry Lewis, Leader of the London Borough of Sutton said:
"People living in and visiting Sutton have told us that they want more cultural experiences and things to do in the town centre. Throwley Yard is the latest step in making this happen after the successful opening of Oru Sutton in February, offering a unique blend of entertainment, education and community engagement.
“In collaboration with the Really Local Group, renowned for their successful projects in London such as Peckham Levels and Catford Mews, I'm really proud the Council is bringing culture back to our main town centre.
“The opening of Throwley Yard means even more exciting and fun things to see and do in our town centre. Local people and visitors say they love our mix of restaurants and bars and we are really excited that an independent cinema, a DJ school and a comedy club are all happening at Throwley Yard.”
“I love that companies like the Really Local Group want to bring their mix of the arts and entertainment to Sutton. Sutton is now a place where businesses want to invest and people want to live.. Sutton is coming alive and I know we are going to see more great businesses becoming part of the Sutton scene.”
Preston Benson, Founder and CEO of Really Local Group, said:
“Throwley Yard Cinema has been in the works for a number of years. Built on the site of the former Chicago’s nightclub, the venue has undergone a huge amount of renovation to reinvigorate the space as a cultural hub in the heart of the high street, bringing a wide range of film and culture to the local community.
“We’re very proud of the space we’ve created and we look forward to Sutton locals enjoying the new venue and rich programme of films and events that it will offer.”
Throwley Yard's cinema screens will be a focal point for film enthusiasts, families, and the community at large. The diverse programming will cater to a wide range of tastes, ensuring that Throwley Yard Cinema becomes a cultural destination for everyone.
The project has been funded by the Government's Future High Streets Fund and Council investment.
