The Council has a scheme planned to start on 6th January 2025 in Longfellow Road, Worcester Park.

The scheme is to reconstruct the footway on both sides of the road, and had been a long standing Council commitment that was held up due to the need to replace the Lamp Columns in the road, which the Council’s Street Lighting team did earlier this year.

The work will involve reconstructing the footway, replacing broken and sunken kerb stones, replacing ironwork and some of the channels in the footway, resurfacing the footway and then repainting the footway parking bay markings, once the work has been completed.

Where Longfellow Road is a long road at around 750m, this will not be a quick process unfortunately and will take, we estimate, between 14 and 16 weeks in total.

There may be brief periods when vehicular access to your house will not be possible but these will be kept to a minimum. The contractor has been instructed to give prior notice of this.

To enable the contractor to carry out this work you are requested not to park on the highway within the active working area, which will be signed and “no parking” cones will be placed in the carriageway in advance. Parking where it was footway parking will be temporarily suspended in areas where construction work is being carried out (to allow the footway to be reconstructed).

To minimise the inconvenience to residents we are proposing to suspend the Footway Parking Bays, 100m to 120m at a time and move down the road in sections (e.g. suspend a section, reconstruct the section, re-open the section and move onto the next section). Where the road is so narrow, on safety grounds we are having to suspend parking on both sides of the road at the same time. As a result we will reconstruct both sides of the road at the same time (as part of a section) and when that is complete, we will then move onto the next section.

The process will start from the junction with Lincoln Road, working through to the junction with Central Road. The section from Lincoln Road to Green Lane will then be done following this, through to the completion of the job during April. To support the works, the Council will be implementing an “except for access” (for Residents) Road Closure during the work hours (between 08:00 and 17:00).

This is to ensure that:

● Residents will have a safe egress and regress during the works and when moving around the road whilst the works are going on.
● There will be no traffic being held up when we have deliveries of Grabs and Concrete to the site which will be needed to allow the Contractor to do the work required.
● Residents will still be able to get access with their car and exit, including any deliveries to their houses.
● The Parking Suspension mentioned above however will still be needed on both sides of the road for a 100m to 120m length at a time.

During the course of the works, the Council’s Planned Maintenance Contractor, FM Conway, will be setting up a compound in Hazelmere Gardens for the duration of the works. This is where they will be storing plant and materials so the parking in the small cul-de-sac will unfortunately be suspended for the duration of the works.
