Why building a strong local economy is important for us all

I was delighted to recently host businesses and other organisations from across Sutton to discuss how we can continue our goal of strong and fair economic growth in the borough that benefits everyone.
Attracting businesses and investment to Sutton isn't just about numbers; it's about creating a better future for all of us who live, work and study in the borough. Attracting investment means more local jobs, boosting spending in our local businesses, creating training opportunities for our young people, and securing funds for community improvements and infrastructure projects.
Sutton's potential has been recognised on a wider scale. The Mayor of London’s recently launched London Growth Plan named Sutton as a key area for growth in the life sciences sector, through the London Cancer Hub in Belmont. Alongside hosting world-class research and exemplary cancer care, it has brought multi-million-pound investment from Aviva Capital Partners and Socius to develop the site further. Once finished it will create thousands of jobs and contribute £1.2 billion each year to the UK economy.
We want to continue to work more closely with businesses, both new and established, to ensure Sutton can thrive. Their success is our success, and it directly benefits you, our residents, through job creation and a stronger local economy.
The meeting provided a valuable opportunity to hear directly from businesses about why they chose Sutton and how we can continue to make our borough an attractive place to invest and grow.
We are ambitious for Sutton, and I look forward to meeting and hearing from more businesses over the coming months to understand how we can continue to unlock even greater potential from our fantastic borough.
