Council appoints Sutton’s Mayor for 2024/25 at its annual meeting

Councillor Colin Stears was elected for the second year running as Mayor of the London Borough of Sutton at the Annual Meeting of the Council last night, 20 May 2024. 

Councillor Stears was born in the borough at St Helier Hospital and has been a local councillor in The Wrythe ward, Carshalton since 2006, chairing a number of council committees during that time.

The Mayor has also dedicated over 50 years to the NHS, stepping down as a Managing Partner of a large GP practice in 2023. He continues to work part-time, supporting General Practices across South East London.

He is an active member of the Cheam and Sutton Royal British Legion, serving as both Standard Bearer and Treasurer, and he also chairs the Surrey County RBL Conference Committee. Additionally, Councillor Stears is a passionate sports enthusiast, having refereed senior-level football for many years.

Councillor Louise Phelan was also re-elected as Councillor Stear’s Deputy Mayor for a second year. Louise has lived and worked in the borough for over 25 years and is councillor for Sutton South ward. 

Commenting on his re-election as Mayor of the London Borough of Sutton, Councillor Stears said:
“It is a great honour to be elected as Mayor of The London Borough of Sutton for a second year. 

“Over the past year, I have thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with many of Sutton’s community groups and residents. Working alongside Councillor Louise Phelan as my Deputy Mayor has been a pleasure, and I look forward to continuing our partnership for another year.

“As a life-long resident of Sutton, I am extremely proud of our community. I eagerly anticipate meeting more residents and local community groups to thank them for all their work and celebrate the fantastic contributions they make to our borough.”
