Housing options for people over the age of 55, who need some help and support.

Housing for older people

Sheltered housing is sometimes referred to as retirement housing.

It is for people over the age of 55 who can do most things for themselves and want to live independently, but need some extra support.

Property features

The properties are self-contained purpose-built flats and bungalows with their own front doors, kitchens and bathrooms.

There is usually a communal area where residents can socialise.

Some properties are adapted for people with physical disabilities.

Help and support services

Sheltered housing schemes include help and support from on-site staff and an alarm system for 24 hour emergency help.

Each provider has different types of support. You’ll need to find out what services are provided and how much it costs from them.

Arrange sheltered housing

Find a sheltered housing provider

There are a number of providers of supported and sheltered accommodation.

You can find accommodation by:

  • searching the sheltered housing directory on Housingcare.org
  • contacting a high street estate agent

Paying for accommodation

The cost of sheltered accommodation depends on whether you want to rent or buy, and what support you need. Some schemes will cost more than others.

You’ll pay rent or a mortgage on your property and a service charge to cover support services and general maintenance.

You’ll also pay for council tax, water and energy bills.

Help to pay accommodation costs

If you are eligible for housing benefit you may be able to use this towards the cost of your rent and some parts of the service charge.

Age UK provides advice and guidance on paying for sheltered housing schemes.
